Biodiversity refers to all living beings and their interactions with each other and with their environment. Since the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, the preservation of biodiversity has been considered one of the key issues of sustainable development. The adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) during this summit commits the signatory countries to protecting and restoring the diversity of living things.
Africa’s biodiversity is of global importance. The continent accounts for 20.2% of the Earth’s surface and is home to a quarter of the world’s mammal species, about a fifth of the world’s bird species and a sixth of the world’s plant species. Recently, international financial institutions have been mobilising to finance biodiversity in Africa.
