In the media, at conferences and in schools, "The Climate Book" is increasingly cited. AFRIK 21 tells you more about this book that has brought together a collective of Western and African authors on the ecological emergency.

It’s the book of the moment. “The Climate Book”, published by an international group of authors, traces the evolution of a planet polluted by fossil fuels and devastated by ever more intense heat waves and floods. Lead author Greta Thunberg, a young Swedish environmental activist, is known for her environmental criticism and advocacy, often delivered with a vengeance at the highest levels of government (World Economic Forum, United Nations Climate Change Conference, etc.).

The 446-page document, published by Penguin Books in the UK, is divided into five parts: “How does the climate work?”, “Is the planet changing before our eyes?” and “What are the impacts on humanity? But it’s in the fifth part, entitled “What needs to be done now”, that 26 leading figures in their fields address a vibrant message to political decision-makers and investors on all five continents.

The epilogue of a resilient planet

Among them are American climatologist Michael Mann, Canadian novelist Margaret Atwood, the author of The Scarlet Handmaid (one of the most widely read books in the world), Nigerian philosopher Olúfẹ́mi Táíwò, who specializes in geopolitics and climatology at Georgetown University, and Kenyan Wanjira Mathai, head of Africa at the World Resources Institute (WRI). She has worked extensively on deforestation and energy efficiency on the African continent.

Translated into 12 languages, including French and English for worldwide distribution, “The Climate Book” explores the current challenges of climate change adaptation and mitigation, but also proposes avenues of resilience in a context where the shortfall in green financing is much talked about. This collection thus joins other literary productions already widely read in Africa, such as the book Transition écologique en contexte africain. An essay published on February 21, 2023 by the academic Tanoh Raphael Bekoin, published by Harmattan Ivory Coast.
