Where does Cameroon stand in the implementation of integrated water resources management (IWRM)? This question was the focus of a workshop held on October 6, 2023, in the conference room of the Global Water Partnership-Central Africa (GWP-Caf) in Yaoundé. The level of implementation of Gire in Cameroon stands at 49%.

In Cameroon, the Taskforce for monitoring target no. 5 of the sixth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 6.5.1), namely the level of implementation of integrated water resource management (IWRM), has submitted its report for 2023. The Taskforce met in Yaoundé on October 6, 2023 for a workshop organized and financed by the Global Water Partnership-Central Africa (GWP-Caf). Taskforce members assessed SDG indicator 6.5.1 by filling in a questionnaire on the degree of implementation of this indicator in Cameroon.

They found that Cameroon scored an average of 41/100 for the enabling environment; 62/100 for institutions and participation; 48/100 for management tools; and 42/100 for financing. This gives Cameroon an overall average of 49% for the year 2023.

A three-year assessment

With a view to improving living conditions and preserving the environment, in September 2015 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which constitute the new framework for international collaboration broken down into 17 objectives and 169 indicators. These SDGs aim to accelerate sustainable development and track progress between now and 2030. With this in mind, monitoring and reporting on indicator 6.5.1 is based on a self-assessment questionnaire sent to all UN member states every three years. Based on the responses to this questionnaire, a periodic analysis of progress provides an overall picture of the current situation of Gire in the country concerned and worldwide.

In Cameroon, responsibility for achieving this objective has been entrusted to the Ministry of Water and Energy, whose achievements have enabled us to reach a score of 40% at national level in 2020 for the second evaluation cycle, compared with 34% at the end of the first cycle in 2017.
