The Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) wants to improve the supply of electricity to Dandora from sewage sludge. This is the rationale behind the “Wastewater Energy Recovery and Sludge Management Project at Dandora Estate Sewage Treatment Plant”, currently underway in Kenya. The project is currently at the stage of recruiting a consultancy firm to undertake the review of the feasibility study, preliminary design and tender documentation for the sewage sludge energy recovery plant.
The call for expressions of interest to recruit a consultancy firm was launched on 6 June 2023 and is due to close on 29 June. The successful firm will carry out a detailed assessment of the current state of the Dandora Estate wastewater treatment plant (120,000 m3 per day), including the condition of the civil infrastructure, anaerobic tanks and other components, in order to identify areas requiring improvement. The future firm will also be required to prepare designs, technical specifications, evaluation criteria, performance criteria and any other relevant information specific to the project.

It will also be necessary to provide detailed cost estimates for the project, including capital costs, operating costs and revenue projections. Prepare tender documentation for the proposed energy recovery and sludge management facility, including construction of the energy recovery facility and effluent reuse options, and carry out an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) of the project in accordance with national and international regulations and standards.
The selected consultant will have 12 months to complete the various works with financial support from the African Development Bank (AfDB), and also undertake financial and economic modelling for the proposed project activities, including consideration of different business models for implementation, operation and maintenance costs, and risk assessment. The consultancy’s input will be equally important in preparing the full proposals for the funding required to implement the “Wastewater Energy Recovery and Sludge Management Project at Dandora Estate Sewage Treatment Works”.
