The capacity of the Accra Wastewater Treatment Plant will soon be increased as Accra Sewerages Systems Ghana Limited (SSGL), a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), recently started work to upgrade and expand the facility. SSGL selected the French company EMO to increase the capacity of its wastewater treatment plant from 2,000 m3 to 3,500 m3 per day.

“The upgraded plant will be able to screen components such as used condoms, sanitary napkins, nappies, etc. from the wastewater in and around Accra using state-of-the-art technology,” explains Florence Cobbold, SSGL’s Managing Director. Thanks to EMO’s work, the Accra wastewater treatment plant will be able to handle more than 350 truckloads of wastewater per day, compared to the current 200 truckloads.

As part of its contract, EMO will provide a capacity building programme for the technology to be installed at the Accra treatment plant. This will facilitate the transfer of knowledge to the Ghanaians who will manage the rehabilitated plant. The sanitation project will thus improve wastewater management in the Ghanaian capital from the SSGL wastewater treatment plant, which was inaugurated in 2012.

The JGC Group has built similar plants in Adjen Kotoku, James Town (Greater Accra), Kumasi (1000 m3) and other communities in Ghana.
