It is part of the Unplanned Areas and Employment Enhancement Program (UAUEEP) co-financed by the French Development Agency (AFD) and the European Union (EU) in Egypt. The water supply and sanitation project being completed in the Giza governorate has also been supported by the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (MSMEDA) and other Egyptian agencies.
The new facilities are located in the area of Ard el Lewa. They were built by the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater (HCWW). A new reservoir stores 6,000 m3 of water from the underground reserves of Giza. Drinking water is supplied to 35,000 households in Ard el Lewa area through a distribution network. In Giza governorate, HCWW has also rehabilitated drinking water networks in Saftawy and Salama Al Rady areas.

As for sanitation, the public company has upgraded the wastewater networks in Saftawy and Salama Al Rady. AFD and the EU have provided 94 million Egyptian pounds (nearly 6 million dollars) for the implementation of this project in a context marked by water stress and the Covid-19 pandemic which requires more precautions regarding sanitation.
Through the UAUEEP program, the EU and AFD also support sustainable development efforts, particularly in disadvantaged localities in all governorates of Egypt.
