More than two years after the start of the “Water for Sustainable Development (WSSD)” project in Burkina Faso, the consortium formed by the Netherlands Development Organization in Burkina Faso (SNV-BF) and World Waternet (WWn), is launching a call for tenders for the implementation of its third component. Open until April 29, 2022, the call for expressions of interest aims to recruit a company that will build 10 boreholes and three autonomous water stations (AEW), also known as improved village water systems (SHVA).
The future installations will be located in the councils of Kona and Safane, in the Boucle du Mouhoun region, in order to strengthen the supply of drinking water to the population.
Funding from the Netherlands
According to a report published in February 2022 by Wash Severity Classification (WSC), in Burkina Faso, the Boucle de Mouhoun is the region with the lowest rate of use of an improved water source (55%). The ECDD project is also expected to improve sanitation and hygiene services.
The company selected in the tender will complete the work within five and a half months. The boreholes will be equipped with human-powered pumps. The Netherlands is financing the ECDD project with 12.45 million euros.

In addition to the construction of the boreholes and AEPs, the ECDD project aims to strengthen institutions involved in water, sanitation and agricultural management such as water agencies, local water committees (Cle), councils and agricultural umbrella organizations in Burkina Faso. Launched in December 2020, the project is expected to end in December 2024.
