French Development Agency (AFD) is continuing to support the acceleration of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Paris, France-based financial institution will release €2.4 million in 2024 to fund projects focusing on gender equality (SDG5), access to water and sanitation (SDG6), climate resilience (SDG13), biodiversity protection (SDG15) and digital connectivity, among others.

Each project selected will receive financial support of between €200,000 and €500,000, as well as technical assistance for its implementation. The funds are intended primarily for “private foundations” that work with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and civil society organisations (CSOs), particularly in Africa.

The priority countries in AFD’s call for partnerships, which closes on 4 July 2023, include Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Central African Republic (CAR), Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Djibouti, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea, Haiti, Liberia, Madagascar, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal and Togo.

Meanwhile, the agency headed by Rémy Rioux is currently examining applications from 83 countries as part of its call for expressions of interest, which closed on 15 May 2023. Start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) were invited to submit their green solutions for accelerating the ecological transition, particularly on the African continent. The winners will be rewarded by the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs (MEAE).
