In South Africa, the private sector is increasingly turning to renewable energies. This is the case of Air Products South Africa, a company specialising in industrial and medical gases. The subsidiary of the American industrial group Air Products and Chemicals has just signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Mulilo Energy, an independent power producer (IPP) based in Cape Town. The PPA covers the sale of 75 MW of electricity generated by a solar photovoltaic power plant.
The park will be built in the Northern Cape province and is expected to reach financial close in the fourth quarter of 2023. “The solar farm will be jointly owned by Air Products and Mulilo, demonstrating their collaborative efforts to encourage clean energy initiatives,” says Mulilo.

According to Mulilo, the plant will be capable of producing 240 GWh of electricity per year. “This significant output will make a significant contribution to the country’s renewable energy targets, reducing dependence on conventional energy sources and promoting a greener future,” says Mulilo. The company, headed by John Cullum, thus intends to contribute to the energy transition that is at the heart of public policy in South Africa.
The company participates in the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) and has been allocated a portfolio of 420 MW of photovoltaic solar energy. Mulilo is also a shareholder in the Longyuan Mulilo De Aar and Longyuan Mulilo De Aar 2 North wind farms, with a combined capacity of 280 MW.
