Lumos Nigeria, a subsidiary of Lumos Global, a Dutch off-grid solar energy provider, is joining forces with YPO (Young Professionals Organisation), a youth organisation that promotes community leadership through networking and professional development, and the Lagos State Government to limit the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in Lagos, the economic capital of Nigeria. The project involves the African countries most affected by Covid-19. According to the latest assessment by the authorities, the disease has already caused 44 deaths out of 1,532 people who tested positive for the coronavirus in 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory Abuja.
Lumos Nigeria will supply solar-powered systems to ICU units at the Covid-19 isolation and treatment centre of Eti-Osa, located in Lagos. These will enable the centre to operate 24 hours a day. The facility was recently constructed by YPO and was inaugurated by the Governor of Lagos State on April 22, 2020. It is designed to have a 70-bed capacity. The health care infrastructure also has a 10-bed intensive care isolation unit, four ventilators, monitors, respirators, mobile X-ray, ultrasound and oxygen facilities to help combat the pandemic in the state. “Our decision to support this emergency unit and other similar facilities across the country is based on the belief that access to stable and reliable energy is crucial for the provision of emergency health care,” said Adepeju Adebajo, Managing Director of Lumos Nigeria.
Lumos Nigeria’s donation to the isolation centre was supported by a grant from All On Investment through the All On Covid-19 Solar Relief Fund. All On Investment is an independent branch of the Shell Petroleum Development Company, which is committed to increasing access to electricity in Nigeria.
Lumos Nigeria, a subsidiary of Lumos Global, has already equipped more than 100,000 homes and small businesses. The company is aiming to provide solar solutions to millions of Nigerian customers by 2025.
