The call for projects for the second edition of the Sustainable Industrial Zones Fund (Fonzid2) closes on 31 May 2023. The initiative supported by the American authorities aims to improve productivity and environmental performance in the Moroccan economy.

Morocco is counting on the eco-responsible practices of public and private companies to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. It is in this context that the Moroccan government is launching the second call for projects of the Sustainable Industrial Zones Fund (Fonzid2). Interested economic and industrial operators have until 31 May 2023 to submit their applications.

According to the Moroccan authorities, the aim is to support Moroccan companies through the financing of eco-responsible production methods, particularly in the rational use of natural resources and local materials. This will also contribute to the creation of at least 57,000 jobs for young people. “We invite project leaders to apply massively to this initiative which promotes the dynamics of transformation towards a decarbonised and competitive industry. This will be done with a view to the sustainability and durability of investments, just as was the case with Fonzid1,” explains Ryad Mezzour, the Moroccan Minister of Industry and Trade.

With a total cost of $150 million co-financed by the United States of America, the initiative will be jointly piloted byMalika Laasri, the Director General of the Millennium Challenge Account-Morocco (MCA-Morocco), and Carrie Monahan, the Director for Morocco of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), the bilateral development agency of the United States of America.

In 2022, the nine winners of the first Fonzid cohort received a total of $80 million and technical support for the implementation of their budding green projects. These projects include the construction and development of 16 green buildings covering a total area of three hectares around the Tawfik Jadida park located in the municipality of Bouskoura. This initiative carried out by the Casablanca-based company Yasmine Immobilier aims at “renting infrastructures for non-polluting industrial activities”.
