People living in the town of Guercif in the Oriental region of Morocco will certainly have a better supply of drinking water. This is the aim of the project to secure the supply of drinking water to the Moroccan town from groundwater, recently inaugurated by the National Electricity and Drinking Water Company (ONEE). A total of 90,000 inhabitants are benefiting from the drinking water project in Guercif, in response to the water stress caused by the drought.
The Moroccan state-owned company has built a number of structures to exploit the Moulouya water basin. These include five boreholes in the Ras Laksar council, with a total flow rate of 60 litres per second, a recovery station with a reservoir and a control tank, as well as the laying of a 1.5 km pipeline.

“The flow mobilised by this project will be channelled via the 60 km of pipeline already laid, as part of the structural project to reinforce and secure the supply of drinking water to the town of Guercif from the Targa Ou Madi dam, which will be inaugurated before the end of 2023”, says ONEE.
In addition to improving the supply of drinking water, the inauguration of new groundwater supply infrastructure for the town of Guercif will promote the socio-economic development of Morocco’s Oriental region. ONEE has invested 14.2 million Moroccan dinars (over 1.3 million euros) in the project.
