Ivory Coast is getting tougher on environmental protection. The Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Séka Séka chaired a meeting on Thursday, September 12, 2019 in Abidjan, the capital of Ivory Coast. The main topic discussed was the revision of the Framework Law on the Environmental Code. The reforms to the law will enable Ivory Coast to acquire an effective legal instrument for better regulation of activities in the environmental sector.
The two-day workshop was organised by the National Agency for Environment and Sustainable Development, in collaboration with the World Bank. Over a period of 48 hours, some 40 participants, including representatives of ministries, technical and financial partners and members of civil society, discussed ways of making the Environment Act more up-to-date. The meeting is the continuation of a process to revise the Environmental Code launched in October 2018. The main outcomes of the workshop are the establishment of a steering committee, a scientific committee and general coordination; three entities that will work in the coming months to revise the law
A revision to adapt the law to current situations
With climate change on the rise, Ivory Coast is facing coastal erosion problems, as well as numerous floods. First, the reform will provide the country with tools to meet its specific needs. Secondly, it will enable the country to update itself with regard to the international agreements it has signed and ratified on environmental protection, such as the Paris Agreements.
