The National Transitional Council (CNT) in Guinea has passed a law authorising financing agreements with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB). The US$18.8 million financing is for the modernisation and expansion of the wastewater treatment plant in the capital Conakry.
The government of the Republic of Guinea will receive funds for the project to modernise and expand the Conakry wastewater treatment plant. The National Transitional Council (CNT) has just passed a law authorising the ratification of financing agreements between this West African country and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB). This is a financing of 18.8 million dollars, including a loan of 10 million dollars and a grant of 8.5 million dollars. This funding is in addition to the 2.86 million euros released by the Guinean government, for a total amount of 21.66 million dollars. The financing agreement ratified on 17 September 2022 between Guinea and the IsDB was signed a few months earlier, on 6 April 2022.
The available funding will cover all of the works planned under the project, namely “upgrading and increasing the capacity of the existing plant from 5,000 m3 per day to 25,800 m3 per day by 2035, renewing the five existing wastewater pumping stations to meet international standards and building the capacity of the implementing agency’s staff and the actors in the sanitation sector,” the CNT said.
The wastewater treated by the rehabilitated wastewater treatment plant will be returned to nature. The aim is to protect the environment and improve the living environment and health conditions of the population of the city of Conakry, estimated at more than 2 million inhabitants.

While waiting for the launch of the modernization of the Conakry water treatment plant, the government is pursuing other projects in the capital, notably the Urban Water Project of Guinea (PUEG). In terms of sanitation, the project involves the implementation of a master plan for Greater Conakry to improve the management of rainwater, wastewater and sewage sludge.
