It is another important achievement in the history of Zoomlion, the company that deals with waste management in Ghana. The Ghanaian company has been acknowledged for its efforts by a non-governmental organisation (NGO), the African Clean-Up Initiative (ACI). The award ceremony was held on the sidelines of the Africa Clean Up Conference, which brought together stakeholders in the sanitation industry from August 2 to 3, 2019, on the theme “Transformation for Sustainable Development: Promoting Environmental Sustainability in Africa.”
The award was presented to Zoomlion for its contribution to the development of products, technologies and investments that have improved the quality of sanitation service in Africa. In addition, the company’s actions have also made it possible to clear several places in Ghana of their garbage. The company has distinguished itself by creating many jobs and building Ghanaian’s capacity in sanitation. To date, it has a total internal workforce of 3,000 people and manages more than 85,000 workers through various forms of public-private partnerships (PPPs). The company has also set up Zoom Kids Clubs in more than 1,000 schools across the country. These clubs are specialised in raising awareness among young students in order to develop good health and environmental practices in them.
The company does not intend to stop there. In an interview with the local press, Ernestina Kwakyewa Sintim, the communications manager, said Zoomlion will set up a mobile composting plant to help sort, recycle and compost waste. This initiative complements the commissioning, for some time now, of Zoomlion-labelled bins that make it possible to collect waste more efficiently. In June 2019, the company even announced its intention to equip every region of the country with a recycling centre.
In Ghana, 12,710 tonnes of solid waste are produced every day and according to the company’s estimates, 22% of this waste is made up of recyclable materials (scrap metal, plastic, leather, etc.)
