GHANA: Dispose Green to collect solid waste on demand nationwide

“Dispose Green” aims to improve solid waste collection in Ghana. The promoter of the digital platform, start-up Jumeni, also aims to expand its activities to other West African countries. To meet this challenge, Jumeni plans to expand its network of collectors.

Since its launch in 2019, Dispose Green teams have made some 2,000 field trips after a request. “Requests are made from any mobile device. As soon as the request is received, the platform designates the nearest collector to carry out the collection. We guarantee a collection within 24 hours,” says Jumeni.

In addition to organic waste, Dispose Green collects recyclable waste, including plastic bottles, paper and glass. Through its digital platform, Jumeni is helping to reduce plastic pollution in Ghana. With a population of over 31.6 million, the West African country produces 3,000 tonnes of plastic waste every day, of which only 3% is recycled. Uncollected plastic waste clogs drainage systems, is illegally burned or ends up in rivers and the ocean.

The start-up Jumeni was recently included in the fifth cohort of the Ghana Climate Innovation Centre (GCIC). This is a centre of the World Bank’s InfoDev climate development programme. The programme provides support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups in Ghana for the development of profitable business concepts that can contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation.

“Dispose Green”, Jumeni’s digital platform was also awarded under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Waste Recovery Platform programme. The initiative launched in 2018 promotes waste recovery in Ghana through the creation of a digital solutions and one-stop shop platform connecting all stakeholders in the waste management chain.
