Guinness Ghana Breweries is greening the production process of its beverages in Ghana. The subsidiary of the British Diageo Group now benefits from a recently commissioned solar photovoltaic plant on the roof of its Achimota brewery in the Accra Metropolitan District. The solar plant, which has a capacity of 1,095 kWp, was installed by CrossBoundary Energy.

According to the clean energy provider, the solar plant provides up to 19% of the electricity consumed by Guinness Ghana Breweries. CrossBoundary Energy has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the brewery company. According to the agreement, Guinness Ghana will only pay an electricity bill each month. CrossBoundary Energy will operate, manage and finance the maintenance of the solar plant.

Over the next 15 years, the solar plant will supply 1,500 MWh per year, while avoiding 10,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Through this project, CrossBoundary Energy continues to solarise breweries in Africa. For example, the company recently commissioned a solar plant that provides clean electricity to the Nigerian Breweries Plc brewery in Ibadan, Nigeria. This additional solar power plant provides 663.6 kWp through 1,680 solar panels installed on the factory roof.
