The Sahay Solar project to build a solar power plant in Gambia will be launched in the coming months. The announcement was made on November 14, 2019 by German company officials Max Spannagel and Sebastien Zeine during a press conference. The infrastructure will allow several households to be electrified.
Solar energy seems to be a fairly promising market in The Gambia. According to the German company’s managers, Max Spannagel and Sebastien Zeine, this is a market with significant potential. The offer will allow consumers to make real savings.
For the time being, the total installed capacity in The Gambia is 125 MW, although the actual production is about 75 MW. The Gambia wants to connect one third of the rural population to electricity through off-grid solutions by 2030. This will require the installation of mini networks and autonomous home systems. In Gambia, the rate of access to electricity is 47 per cent. And to accelerate its development, a law was passed in 2004 in favour of the general liberalisation of the energy market, which facilitates investment by local and foreign companies in this sector.
Sahay Solar is a German company specialised in off-grid power supply and solar water pumping. It is present in several East African countries. Sahay solar offers services such as training, consultation, monitoring and water supply. In East Africa, the company has provided solar systems for schools, health centres, private institutions and solar water pumping projects for States and non-governmental organisations.
