Burkina Faso wants to step up the fight against plastic pollution. To do so, the government of the West African country is looking for two organisations to strengthen the plastic waste recovery system and manufacture biodegradable packaging.
The call for tenders launched on 18 December 2023 in the capital Ouagadougou by the Burkina Faso Ministry of the Environment, Water and Sanitation, through the Environmental Intervention Fund (FIE), will be open until 18 January 2023. It concerns research structures, economic interest groupings (EIGs), cooperatives, private operators, associations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), unions of cooperatives or groupings, federations or confederations of cooperatives or groupings.
The organisations selected at the end of the call for expressions of interest will be allocated a total of 750 million CFA francs (around €1.15 million) by the Burkina Faso government to carry out projects aimed at reducing plastic pollution, which has been increasing steadily over the years. According to the Burkina Faso Ministry of the Environment, Water and Sanitation, the production of plastic waste has risen from 104,011 tonnes per year in 2010 to 224,437 tonnes in 2021.
At the same time, plastic imports have also doubled over the past decade in the country led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, rising from 60,000 tonnes a year in 2019 to 118,000 tonnes in 2021.
