Energy efficiency in buildings, wastewater treatment and waste recovery, management of natural spaces and biodiversity, soft mobility and low-carbon mobility, to name but a few. These are the categories in the running for the fourth Med’Innovant Africa competition, organised by Euroméditerranée, the French public urban development body.

For this 2023 edition, interested start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have until 31 August to submit their applications. After several selection phases, the winners of the “Jury Prize” and the “Coup de Coeur Prize” will receive €7,000 and €2,500 respectively, as well as visibility among foreign investors.

“The aim of this innovation event is to identify, promote and accelerate project leaders who want to bring to fruition innovative initiatives (solutions and services) – in line with the new imperatives of development and sustainability in Mediterranean and African regions – that can be implemented within the Euroméditerranée area and, more broadly, the Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolitan area”, says the French public urban development body.

In 2022, the third Med’Innovant cohort was unveiled at the Emerging Valley summit, which closed on 29 November 2022 in the city of Marseille. The Tunisian start-up Wayout Ecological Solutions won over the jury with its “Zigofiltre”. This solution uses a waste recovery filter to keep rainwater drainage networks clean in around ten municipalities in Tunisia. Osvaldo Rey Mokouma from the Democratic Republic of the Congo took the top prize for his “GreenBox” platform, which enables small-scale farmers to store their produce for longer using mobile solar-powered cold rooms.
