In order to improve the management of water and sanitation services in Africa, the International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering (2iE) is launching, in partnership with the Swiss Cooperation (DDC), seven scholarships at Master’s level for training in “humanitarian water, sanitation and hygiene (Wash)”. The scholarships for the academic year 2021-2022 are only open to students from Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Chad.

The senior managers, project managers or coordinators who will complete their training at 2iE are expected to contribute to improving the management of water and sanitation services in their respective countries. Africa has enormous surface and groundwater resources. Yet the continent is still struggling to achieve universal access to safe drinking water. When it comes to sanitation and hygiene services, the picture is also far from satisfactory. Only 28% of the population of sub-Saharan Africa has access to basic sanitation facilities and 32% still practice open defecation, according to El Hadji Abdourahmane Ndione, the director general of the Senegalese Association of Standards (ASN).

Students interested in the call for applications have until June 30th, 2021 to apply. The winners will study at the International Institute of Water and Environmental Engineering based in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, for one year. Tuition, registration, insurance, accommodation and living expenses will be fully covered according to the call for applications document released by 2iE on May 31st. 2021.
